- 4 slices of bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 4 slices of cheese (Gruyère or Emmental)
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 1 tablespoon of flour
- 1 cup of milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, add flour, and stir to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread the roux on one side of each slice of bread.
- Layer ham and cheese on the unbuttered side of two slices of bread, then top with the other two slices, buttered side out.
- Place the sandwiches in a skillet over medium heat and cook until golden brown on both sides.
- Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- In the same skillet, fry the eggs to your liking.
- Top each sandwich with a fried egg and serve immediately.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, omit the ham and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
- Serve with a side of mixed greens for a complete meal.
