Description

A crispy, golden blooming onion air-fried to perfection, featuring tender petals and a zesty flavor profile, ideal for gatherings and movie nights.


Ingredients

  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Dipping sauce of choice (ranch, spicy mayo, or honey mustard)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion: Remove the skin, cut off about half an inch from the top, and slice into petals without cutting all the way through.
  2. Whisk the dry ingredients: Combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Coat the onion in buttermilk, allowing it to soak for a moment.
  4. Cover the onion in the flour mixture until well-coated.
  5. Double dip the onion by returning it to buttermilk, then coating with breadcrumbs.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Air fry the onion for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!

Notes

Make ahead by preparing the onion up to the battering stage and storing it in the refrigerator for up to 1 hour. Can also be baked at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes.
