- 4 cups All-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking soda
- 1 teaspoon Fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar (optional)
- 1.75 cups Cold buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons Irish butter (room temperature, for spreading)
- Additional Irish butter (for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
- Incorporate buttermilk by making a well in the dry mixture and pouring it in, gently stirring until combined.
- Form the dough by lightly kneading in the bowl for about 30 seconds until it forms a coherent mass.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick on a floured surface.
- Score the top with an X, about ½ inch deep, using a sharp knife.
- Bake on a baking sheet for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool for at least 10 minutes and serve warm with Irish butter.
Notes
For a make-ahead option, refrigerate the dough for up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat slices in a toaster for best results.
