Description

An easy and rewarding recipe for the classic Irish soda bread, perfect when paired with creamy Irish butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar (optional)
  • 1.75 cups Cold buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons Irish butter (room temperature, for spreading)
  • Additional Irish butter (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
  3. Incorporate buttermilk by making a well in the dry mixture and pouring it in, gently stirring until combined.
  4. Form the dough by lightly kneading in the bowl for about 30 seconds until it forms a coherent mass.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick on a floured surface.
  6. Score the top with an X, about ½ inch deep, using a sharp knife.
  7. Bake on a baking sheet for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool for at least 10 minutes and serve warm with Irish butter.

Notes

For a make-ahead option, refrigerate the dough for up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat slices in a toaster for best results.
